The best altcoins for August could hinge on one event, the Federal Reserve's July 29 rate decision, with a possible interest rate hike on the table. That catalyst reprices risk assets, and whale wallets are already showing their hand.
Crypto whales are splitting across three tokens, buying one hard, dumping another, and round-tripping a third. BeInCrypto analysts tracking on-chain flows found the divide runs even within one sector, an early read on how big money is positioning before the vote.
Injective (INJ) belongs to the DeFi category. Yet, it has lagged even as fellow DeFi tokens like Aave gained about 6% over the past month. That gap is why it leads the altcoins for August worth tracking.

Crypto whales are treating the weakness as an entry. The top 100 addresses (mega whales) lifted their balance 6.23% over seven days to 97.52 million INJ, according to Santiment. That is close to 5.7 million tokens added, worth about $26 million at the current INJ price. Over the same stretch, exchange outflows deepened. The exchange balance dipped 73.56% to 1.94 million INJ. This possibly signals that holders moved coins into self-custody instead of selling.
Price action, however, contradicts the on-chain whale accumulation. INJ is down about 13% over the past week and slid a further 6.6% in 24 hours, diverging from the sector it sits in. That split makes it the strongest whale-buying case among altcoins for August, with mega holders betting attention rotates into the laggard rather than the leaders.
Markets place roughly a one-in-three chance on a hike at the July 29 meeting and about 82% by September, so accumulating a beaten-down token now positions whales ahead of any relief move.
Ondo (ONDO) tells the opposite story. It ranks among the strongest RWA tokens of the month, up about 25% over the past 30 days.Yet, its whales are cutting exposure the fastest.
Supply held by whales, excluding exchanges, fell from 7.6 billion to 7.58 billion ONDO since July 27, according to Santiment. That drop of roughly 20 million tokens is worth about $7.8 million at the current ONDO price. The timing matters, because the selling landed as the rally matured and days before the Fed meeting. The reserve cut is also the sharpest of the three names here, a signal that fits a token that has already delivered its move.
Price confirms the caution. ONDO is down over 6% in the 24-hour timeline, showcasing the pre-Fed jitters. The distribution and the downturn align, which hints that RWA momentum may be cooling after a wave of tokenization headlines.
